What is your motivation for taking part in the SolarisCare Red Sky Ride?

Three years ago I met and made a lifelong friend, Jim Bond. We had a great deal in common: bikes, sense of humour, bikes, rubbish balance, bikes, and we've both had brain tumours. I had brain cancer in 2006 (Meoulloblastoma), followed by testicular cancer in 2008 (seminoma). Both were primary cancers. Jim has participated in the Red Sky Ride on many occasions and has told me of how great an experience it is. I want to share this experience with my friend, make new friends along the way, and, importantly, raise money and awareness for helping families find patiences dealing with cancer at whatever stage they are at. I know firsthand how important the work of organisations like Solaris is.

What made you take up cycling?

I've loved riding a bike since I was 3. Riding BMX bikes until I was 14, then racing them on and off until I was 29. Side effects from brain surgery is the only reason I don't ride my BMX anymore. I've ridden and raced mountain bikes for over 20 years, the same for road bikes. My "racing" these days is participation rides where my aim is to finish without incidents. A quote which describes my riding these days:

"I don't ride my bike to win races, nor ride to get places. I ride to escape this world, I ride to find peace with myself. I ride to feel free, and I ride to feel strong"
